Runemage/Tilesets
There are currently three main popular build for runemage. Each build uses the same talents mostly the same affixes for rings, armor and weapons, and mostly differ in the spells and consequently the tilesets they use. This makes it easy to switch mage builds by changing one's loadout.
- Frost-Fire Mage - Lowest skill floor, but also lowest DPS ceiling.
- Fire Mage - High DPS, but requires high casting speed and is exhausting for both player and controllers.
- Rotation Mage - Highest DPS and increases DPS of all party members, but only one Rotation Mage per party.
Frost-Fire Mage
→ Main Page: Runemage/Tilesets/Frost-Fire Mage
Frost-Fire Mages cast a lot of Greater Fireball, and use Greater Frostbolt to keep up the Frozen debuff and medium speed tilesets up. The minimum required casting speed is low and the two spells are easy to learn, which makes this the easiest technique to start with.
Once you hit a Fireball speed of about 2.2 spells per second and/or are able to cast Greater Affliction consistently, you can look into the other techniques, which have a much higher damage ceiling.
All of the following tilesets require a specific casting speed. To determine which one is best for you, test how many spells you can cast while Triplicity is active.
Tilesets | Required casting speed (Fireballs) |
Theoretical Max DPS with a 30+7 | |
---|---|---|---|
ᚫ | Flurry | 0.625-1.0 spells per second (during Triplicity: 5-8 spells) |
31K - 39K |
ᚫ | Frostling | 1.25-2.2 spells per second (during Triplicity: 10-17 spells) |
62K - 89K |
Fire Mage
→ Main Page: Runemage/Tilesets/Fire Mage
Fire Mages maximizes their damage by spamming the spell with the best cast-time to damage ratio, Greater Fireball. The Mage needs to be able to cast at least 2.2 Greater Fireballs per second. A subset of this technique gets away with a lower casting speed, but requires having a musketeer or bard to activate healing tiles.

Rotation Mage
→ Main Page: Runemage/Tilesets/Rotation Mage
Rotation Mages typically cast Greater Fireball, Greater Frostbolt, and Greater Affliction in a rotation to get the best value out of their talents and to boost the party's damage with the Weakness debuff from the Affinity talent.
