Types of Mages[edit | hide | hide all]

There are three primary techniques used for maximizing a Runemage's DPS. Each has their pros and cons.

  • Frost Fire Spam mages cast a lot of Fireball 2s and use Frost 2 to keep up the Frozen debuff and medium speed tilesets up.
  • Fireball Spam mages cast Fireball 2 at a minimum of 2.2 Fireballs a second as their whole rotation. A subset of this technique also includes having a musketeer or bard to proc healing tiles.
  • Rotation mages cast typically Fireball 2, Frost 2, and Affliction 2 in a rotation.
Technique Pros Cons
Frost/Fire Spam Mage Higher DPS at lower casting speeds compared to the other two techniques. The DPS ceiling for this technique is the lowest of all three.
Fireball Spam Mage DPS higher than Frost/Fire Spam Mage at 2.2 spells per second and isn't affected by other party mages' techniques. Destroys controllers and requires at least 2.2 Fireballs per second OR a dedicated healer.
Rotation Mage Highest DPS and increases DPS of all party members. There can only be one Rotation mage per party because they overwrite each other's Affliction debuff.

Frost 2 / Fireball 2 Spam Mage[edit | hide]

This is the easiest set of tilesets to proc for new mages. As long as you can cast between 1 and 2 spells per second, these will proc for you. You will cast Fireball 2 for as long as the Frost debuff is on the target. New mages will probably get 2 or 3 Fireball 2s per Frost 2 rotation.

Frost 2 / Fireball 2 Spam Rotation[edit | hide]

- Only at the start of the fight cast: One Fireball2.

- Cast: 1 Frost 2.

- Cast: 2-7 Fireball 2s (more fireballs if you cast faster. Rotation takes 4 seconds)

Combat rotation (repeat):

  • Frost 2, 3-7 Fireball 2, depending on how many Fireball 2s you can fit before the Frost debuff disappears on the current target.

Fireball Spam Mage[edit | hide]

The barrier to entry for this technique is 2.3 Fireball 2s per second. Otherwise, you will not be procking these tiles. The harder tiles ᛈᚢᚾ (4 hits per second, fireball, 3 hits per second) and ᛢᚢᛈ (5 hits per second, fireball, 4 hits per second) can be added to your set whenever, but will not proc until you're consistently landing more than 2.5 Fireball 2s a second.

Real simple - you'll be casting Fireball 2 more than 2.3 a second.

Heal/Rotation Mage ( > 1.7 - < 4.1 Fireball 2s a second)[edit | hide]

Rotation for Fire Tiles: Fire Spamming + Healing. You must be able to get the 2 hits a second tile when casting (which is generally if you're a practiced mage).

Rotation Mages[edit | hide]

The barrier to entry for this technique is primarily the speed at which you can cast Affliction 2. If you can cast at least one Affliction 2 per second, and at least 1.3 Fireball 2s a second, you will be able to activate this tileset consistently.

The gist of this technique can be broken down into two sections:

  • Start of Combat
  • Affliction 2 Rotation

Rotation Mage Technique[edit | hide]

Start of Combat[edit | hide]

Start of combat will always be the same, regardless of speed of casting Affliction 2s: Fireball 2, followed with an Affliction 2.

Affliction Rotation[edit | hide]

The rotation is always Frost 2, a number of Fireball 2s dependent on your Fireball 2 casting speed, and an Affliction 2. The aim is to keep 2-3 Affliction stacks on the target at all times, which means how many fireballs you can fit between the Frost 2 and the Affliction 2 is going to be somewhere between 5 and 8, lower if your Fireball 2 speed is slow, higher if your Fireball 2 speed is nearing 3 Fireballs a second.
